Streaming service: HBO Max Zendaya Coleman managed to win the 74th Primetime Emmy award for best actress in a drama series. She did so with her performance in Euphoria as Rue Bennett. This troubled teen has a drug addiction, which she went into rehab for. Season 1 starts with Rue just getting out of rehab, after which she quickly experiences a relapse. However, everything changes when she gets a new classmate, a trans girl named Jules Vaughn. Jules immediately fascinates Rue and the two fall in love.

Knowing this, it’s hardly surprising that HBO Max took home the most Emmy wins in 2022. This Emmy-winning anthology series is set in a luxury beach resort in Hawaii. In every episode, the viewer gets to follow a brand-new character and experience their holiday and their perspective. And these are some interesting perspectives, indeed. It will soon become clear to the guests that this resort isn’t quite the paradise they thought it was.
Best anime series: Arcane: League of Legends
Streaming service: Netflix Arcane‘s story takes place in the fictional world of a famous video game: League of Legends. In Piltover, a utopian city of riches and abundance, two sisters get into a conflict. Their dispute involves advanced technologies. Although making this series was a completely new venture for the video game giants, they received much praise (and an Emmy). Best international drama series: Vigil
Streaming service: BBC iPlayer, Peacock Vigil tells the story of a crew member who mysteriously dies onboard the HMS Vigil. This is a submarine that’s responsible for providing a so-called nuclear deterrent. When the sailor’s death is discovered, the Scottish police are tasked with solving the mystery. Specifically, chief detective Amy Silva is called in to find out what happened. She discovers some secrets during her time on board that have far-reaching implications. These affect not just the people on board the submarine but also the world above water. One would be forgiven for thinking this series is based on the mysterious death of a crew member of the HMS Vigilant. Like the Vigil, this is a submarine that’s used for its nuclear threat. The resemblance is pretty striking, especially since the incident, which occurred in 2012, took place close to Scottish land. Nevertheless, a BBC spokesperson stated Vigil is “a fictional drama and is not inspired by or based on any specific real-life event.”
Best international short-form series: Rūrangi
Streaming service: Neon (a streaming service from New Zealand) The Emmys 2022 proved to not just be about powerful, established media houses. The award for best international short-form series went to independent, New Zealand-based film producer Max Currie. Rūrangi tells the story of Caz Davis, a transgender activist. He left his small farming community in the fictional town of Rūrangi as a child. Now, after 10 years, he comes back and needs to face everyone and everything he left behind.
